Malik has a very sad, horrible, painful, and disturbing past. When he was ten poor little Malik when through a ceremony to have the Pharaoh's(Yami Yugi) memory engraved on his back. His father did this so that the Pharaoh's spirit could be enlightened about the God cards. His entire family, him, his father, his sister Isis, and his servant Rishid, lived in this underground house in Egypt. One day Isis was going into town and Malik wanted to go with her. She wasn't quite sure what to do, but Rishid said that it would be fine, their father was sleeping. While they were in the market, Malik found a picture of a motorcycle and wanted one, even though he couldn't have one. Isis decided it was time for them to go back. On their way home, they ran into Shadi, he told them something, I'm not sure what, then he disappeared. When they arrived, they find that Rishid had been beaten by their father for allowing them outside. Malik wanted to stop his father, but couldn't. All of his anger builded up and formed his Yami. Yami Malik took the Millennium Rod and removed the end so that the dagger could be used. He killed his father and then turned to Rishid to finish him off. But before he could deliver the final blow, Rishid made a comment that allowed Malik to retake control of his body. Oblivious to everything that had happened while his Yami was in control, Malik is grief-stricken to find his father dead. When he asks what happened, Shadi appeared and told Malik that it was the will of the pharaoh. Malik instantly hated Yami Yugi and vowed to get vengeance on his father's death.
